First Woman and African to Lead WTO
Nigerian economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as a general director of the World Trade Organization.
Ms. Okonjo-Iweala age 66, was elected by representatives of the 164 countries that make up the WTO. It constitutes her as the first woman and African to lead the WTO. She will take up a post on the 1st of March 2021.
Okonjo-Iweala is also former Finance and Foreign Minister of Nigeria; Former Managing Director World Bank; Former Chair of Gavi the Vaccine Alliance and African Union and WHO Envoy on Covid-19.
