Another top Spain holiday destination could introduce a tourist tax.

Former tourism minister Reyes Maroto is running to become mayor of Madrid.

Her campaign includes a possible move to impose a fee for visitors.

The levy would be charged on a nightly basis through overnight stays in the city.

Funds raised would be pumped back into tourism related infrastructure and promotion.

Madrid hoteliers have unsurprisingly come out in opposition, saying it will deter tourists.

A Madrid tourist tax has been twice proposed in recent years but never passed.

Other Spanish cities and regions have imposed a tourist fee such as Barcelona and the Balearics.

“It has to be a tax that reverts to the tourism industry,” Maroto said.

Valencia recently approved a visitor tax which comes into force at the end of 2023.
