Asia-Pacific tourism recovery still lags

International tourism to Asia-Pacific is still 83% below pre-pandemic levels.

The UNWTO’s latest data for the January-September period shows how reliant the region is on the outbound China market.

China, the key source market for numerous Asian countries, remains closed.

UNWTO says overall international tourism is expected to reach 65% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022.

“An estimated 700 million tourists travelled internationally between January and September,” UNWTO said.

“Results were boosted by strong pent-up demand, improved confidence levels and the lifting of restrictions,” it added.

The UNWTO World Tourism Barometer showed Europe still leads the recovery with477 million international arrivals, 68% of the global total.

“Our region has certainly taken longer to recover than Europe on the international tourism front,” Tourism and Transport Forum Australia CEO Margy Osmond said.

“We’ve had stricter travel restrictions for longer than in the northern hemisphere.”
