Doha rolls out self-service check-in and bag drop
Doha’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) has announced the successful completion of the first major phase of its Smart Airport programme. The new programme will enable Qatar Airways to process more than 25% of its passengers using self-service check-in and bag drop.
In partnership with aviation IT provider, SITA, and CCM Airport Interiors, the airport has commissioned 62 self-service check-in kiosks and 12 bag-drops, including biometric technology capability. The kiosks are spread across the airport’s departures hall and enable passengers to check-in, print their boarding passes and tags, tag their bags and drop them at bag drop before heading to border control.
In addition to this, HIA has also installed a mobile automated visa document check that enables ground service agents to check a passenger’s visa documentation before continuing their journey.
Currently, the self-service kiosks are for use exclusively by Qatar Airways passengers, however there are plans to roll this service out to other airlines in the future. Once fully operational, it is estimated that processing time could be up to 40% faster.
