France short haul flight ban takes effect
France’s short haul flight ban is now officially in force.
It bans short domestic flights that are possible by trains in less than two-and-a-half hours.
The rule was released in a decree today although it has been in effect for some time.
It was already included in a 2021 climate law but airlines requested clarification from the European Commission to check if it was legal.
The flight ban affects mostly services from Paris to cities like Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux.
The law bans flights as long as the alternative train services are frequent and well-connected, and can accommodate the extra passengers who travelled by air.
There must be regular services enabling same day return trips.
It applies to commercial flights but not private jets.
