Frankfurt airport signs deal to use more wind power
Frankfurt airport operator Fraport has announced plans to power more of the German hub’s operations through wind power.
Fraport has agreed a deal with energy firm Centrica Energy Trading to buy around 63 gigawatt hours of energy per year created by a new wind farm located off Germany’s North Sea coast.
The contract will initially run for five years with wind power being supplied to Frankfurt airport from July. The agreement with Centrica is in addition to a smaller deal signed in 2021 which saw Fraport buy wind energy for the first time.
The move is part of Fraport’s wider attempts to cut carbon emissions at Frankfurt. It is aiming to reduce emissions, which are under the company’s direct control at the airport, to 50,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. If achieved, this would represent a 78 per cent reduction on carbon levels in 1990, which is the base year for international climate agreements.
Fraport, which also operates airports in Greece, Turkey, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Brazil and Peru, added that by 2026 its energy mix would be “mainly drawn” from renewable sources.
Felix Kreutel, SVP of real estate and energy at Fraport, added: “Fraport has set itself an ambitious climate goal. By 2045, we will reduce our carbon emissions to zero throughout the group.
“The PPA (power purchase agreement) with Centrica is an important pillar in our strategic planning. Even now, it is making a major contribution towards shifting our energy mix in the right direction.”
