Police probe British skier’s death in Andorra

Police in an Andorra ski resort are investigating the death of a British snowboarder who crashed into a tree yesterday.

The 59-year-old man is understood to have suffered from a cardiac arrest after the crash in the Grandvalira ski area.

Rescue teams transferred him to the bottom of the slope and tried to revive him, but he died minutes later, according to the resort. He is believed to have been boarding alone at the time of the accident, although his wife was on holiday with him.

The incident happened in the resort of Soldeu on the Avet slope, a black run recommended for experienced skiers, which has been used for World Cup races.

A spokesman for the resort said: “Grandvalira regrets the death of a British tourist who has suffered an accident on the Avet slope in the Soldeu sector.

“The man, who was practising snowboard, lost control and hit a tree, suffering serious injuries and going into cardiac arrest.

“The base station rescue teams rapidly activated the emergency protocol and rushed to the scene to assist the injured man.

“They subsequently transferred him to the bottom of the slope. Despite all attempts to revive him, he died minutes later.

“Grandvalira regrets this terrible loss of life and would like to pass on their condolences to the man’s family and friends.”
