Qatar Airways strengthens South African connections
Qatar Airways is expanding its connectivity into South Africa this year with increased frequencies from six major UK airports – London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cardiff and London Gatwick. With flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban the airline is set to develop its UK market share.
Onboard comfort and service is top of Qatar’s priority with very comfortable seats, chef created menus and up to 4,000 entertainment options. It is little wonder that the airline was awarded World’s Best Business Class at the 2017 Skytrax awards.
South African Tourism is also doing its bit for the UK travel trade with an increased focus on agent training and more programmes from a wider variety of operators. Facebook live events are organised on a regular basis in order to help agents maximise the opportunities the country presents. Short fun question and answer sessions have proved popular and programmes of this nature will be continued throughout the year.
One of Qatar Airways daily destinations is Johannesburg with double daily flights from Doha. The capital of Gauteng province, which is now widely recognised as the regeneration city within the African continent, acts as a hub for the many tourism attractions and neighbourhoods that are proving popular for visitors. Districts such as Maboneng, Braamfontein and Soweto, former home to Nelson Mandella and Desmond Tutu, offer visitors a rewarding cultural experience from Africa’s most important city. From this centre visitors can discover the Apartheid museum, Gold Reef City, the UNESCO listed Cradle of Humankind and the Soweto rebellion Hector Pietersen museum. Slightly further afield is the fabulous Kruger National park with its wildlife and nature experiences.
Within the city shopping ranks high on the interest table and be it international brands or authentic African crafts the varied malls and centres will satisfy the keenest of consumers. Post shopping, Johannesburgers demand a high quality in their restaurants and tourists are able to benefit with a wide variety of local and international cuisines.
