Korean Air has completed its long-awaited acquisition of Asiana Airlines, securing a 63.88% ownership stake after a payment of KRW 800 billion on December 11, 2024.
This acquisition makes Asiana Airlines a subsidiary of Korean Air, with plans for full integration within two years.
The integration strategy focuses on optimizing flight schedules, expanding services to new destinations, and enhancing the global network. Korean Air has committed to avoiding workforce restructuring, opting to reassign employees in overlapping roles.
A unified frequent flyer program is expected to be proposed to the Korea Fair Trade Commission by June 2025. The merger is poised to strengthen Korean Air’s market position while maintaining operational stability.
