Tourism brings joy, discovery, and unforgettable experiences. But it can also be misused by those who seek to exploit the vulnerable. Sadly, child exploitation – especially sexual exploitation – can occur in tourist destinations, often targeting children from poor or unstable backgrounds.
To combat this, the global initiative “The Code” was launched – a voluntary code of conduct for tourism businesses committed to protecting children. Major companies like Hilton, Accor, and TUI are already part of it. They train their staff, implement child protection policies, and raise awareness among travelers.
But it’s not just up to the industry. Every traveler can make a difference. If you see something suspicious – an adult acting inappropriately around a child, signs of trafficking, or a child left alone in a hotel – don’t stay silent.
What can you do?
– Report it to hotel staff or local authorities.
– Contact the local police or your country’s embassy.
– If local support is limited, reach out to global organizations (e.g. ECPAT, Missing Children Europe).
– Use anonymous reporting tools, such as those provided by https://www.ecpat.org.
Child protection is a shared responsibility. Your action might save a life. Travel with awareness – because a child’s safety matters more than any holiday comfort.
