The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) has faced ongoing instability due to the absence of permanent leadership, adversely affecting the state’s vital tourism sector.

Since the departure of President Chris Tatum in 2020, the agency has experienced a series of interim appointments, hindering the implementation of long-term strategies. Only recently have several managers been hired on a permanent basis, offering hope for improved stability.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Lahaina wildfires further exacerbated the crisis. The lack of consistent leadership made it challenging to respond effectively to these events. Additionally, shifts in the agency’s focus—from promoting tourism to managing natural resources—have sparked controversy among stakeholders.

HTA is now planning to appoint a permanent president and CEO to restore stability and effectiveness. However, trust in the agency has been eroded, and the tourism sector requires a well-considered strategy to regain its footing and address future challenges.
