Play launches first flights from Liverpool

Icelandic airline Play

Icelandic airline Play has started flights from Liverpool John Lennon airport – its second destination from the UK after initially launching services from London Stansted.

Play will be operating from Liverpool to Reykjavik twice per week with connecting flights from its Iceland hub to New York Stewart, Boston Logan and Baltimore/Washington airports in the US. The route from Liverpool will operate on Monday and Friday until April 2023.

Birgir Jonsson, Play’s CEO, said the start-up airline had carried the “huge number” of 108,000 passengers in August as it has ramped up services.

Play has been promoting its low prices, compared to non-stop transatlantic flights, and the fact that there is only a 90-minute layover in Reykjavik for passengers travelling from the UK to the US.

Paul Winfield, director of aviation development at Liverpool John Lennon, added: “As well as offering the region’s travellers an excellent low-cost airline product to Iceland and on to New York, Washington and Boston, this will also be another important link for the region’s visitor economy too.”

Play is planning to launch another four aircraft in 2023 to meet its expansion plans, which will take its total fleet up to 10 aircraft by next spring. The airline has also started a recruitment drive to find another 55 pilots and 150 cabin crew.
