Marriott Signs Second Moxy Hotel in Australia

Marriott is set to expand its portfolio of Moxy Hotels in Australia with a Moxy in Perth, the experiential brand’s second hotel signing in the country.

Moxy Hotels first debuted in 2014 in Milan, and has since grown to include more than 40 hotels globally, with three Moxys currently open in Asia Pacific in Tokyo; Osaka; and Bandung, Indonesia.

Construction of the AUD35 million standalone new build Moxy Perth, owned by 195 Hay Street Pty Ltd as trustee for 195 Hay Street Unit Trust, is expected to commence in October 2019.

“Moxy’s global footprint has surged to 44 distinctive hotels, with another 100 in the pipeline worldwide and we are thrilled to be extending the brand further in Australia,” said Paul Foskey, Chief of Development Asia-Pacific Marriott International. “Moxy Perth will be an exciting addition to Perth’s accommodation landscape, taking Marriott International’s presence in Perth to beyond 1,200 hotel rooms adding one more option to our growing portfolio of Select Service Brands options in Perth.”

The 150-room Moxy Perth will be located at 195 Hay Street, within walking distance of the buzzing bars and restaurants of the city’s CBD and nearby to attractions like the WACA Ground, Swan River and Heirisson Island.

Moxy Perth will feature a Moxy Bar, which doubles as the hotel’s check-in where guests receive a complimentary cocktail upon arrival; Moxy Pickups, Moxy’s 24/7 self-service grab-and-go concept serving everything from cereal to noodles, soups and wraps; the Moxy Living Room, a communal space for guests and locals to socialise with their friends and meet new ones; plus a fully equipped fitness centre for guests to stay active. Plug in points and free Wi-Fi will also be available throughout the hotel.

“Moxy is an adventurous, fun and bold response to the desires of today’s travellers, who are seeking out a lifestyle and experience, rather than just a hotel room,” said Sean Hunt, Area Vice President, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Marriott International. “This is the second Moxy hotel signed in Australia in 2019 alone, showing the need for innovative select service lifestyle hotels in the market. Moxy Perth will be a vibrant addition to the city of Perth, which, with its waterfront location and thriving calendar of events continues to attract urban travellers from across Australia and the world.”

Moxy Perth is the second signing in Australia for the Moxy brand this year, following the January 2019 announcement of Moxy Melbourne South Yarra, a 180-room new-build hotel slated to open in July 2021.

Moxy Hotels are a relatively new brand within Marriott’s rapidly growing portfolio and there are currently only three open in Asia – two in Japan and one in Indonesia. As Mr. Matthias Y. Sutter, GM of the JW Marriott Phuket, has firsthand experience working for the two hotels in Japan, we asked him to tell us more about the brand and what it stands for. In this interview filmed on the morning of 24 September 2018 in Phuket, Mr. Sutter gives us an insight into what travellers can expect from a Moxy Hotel, what the hotels are like in Japan, where they are and what expansion plans the brand has for the Asia Pacific region and much, much more.
