More than 90 killed as second earthquake hits Lombok

A second powerful earthquake has hit the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok, killing more than 90 people and injuring hundreds more.

The 7 magnitude quake came a week after another on the holiday island left 14 dead.

Sunday’s earthquake damaged thousands of buildings and could be felt on the neighbouring island of Bali.

Bali airport suffered minor damage but no flight operations were affected or at Lombok’s airport.

Tour operator Asian Trails said some hotels in Senggigi and on the Gili Islands have recieved some light damage. Guests slept outside on elevated ground due to the risk of further tremors and an initial tsunami warning, which has now been lifted.

The company is waiting for the government to confirm extra flights out of Lombok so it can move its clients off the island.

It said some minor damage has been reported on Bali but added: “Bali is considered safe, with no reported casualties.” Latest reports, however, are saying there has been at least one fatality in Bali.

Take That star Gary Barlow was on holiday in Lombok and tweeted to tell fans he was safe.
